Association of Substance Use With Behavioral Adherence to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines for COVID-19 Mitigation: Cross-sectional Web-Based Survey

In a regionally-specific, racially, and ethnically diverse convenience sample, adults who engaged in daily alcohol or opioid use reported lower CDC guideline adherence for COVID-19 mitigation. Any opioid use was associated with greater odds of COVID-19 testing, and daily stimulant use was associated with greater odds of COVID-19 infection. Cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cannabis, or stimulant use were not statistically associated with CDC guideline adherence, after accounting for sociodemographic covariates and other substance use variables. Findings support further investigation into whether COVID-19 testing and vaccination should be expanded among individuals with substance-related risk factors.

Role of Mental Health in the Association Between E-Cigarettes and Cannabis Use

Baseline e-cigarette use and endorsement of severe internalizing mental health/externalizing mental health problems were significantly associated with subsequent cannabis use among U.S. adolescents. Efforts to reduce youth vaping and improve youth mental health could help curb cannabis initiation. Tailored interventions may be warranted for e-cigarette‒using adolescents with internalizing mental health problems.

Do Your Kids Vape?: Investigating Parent Knowledge of Adolescent e-Cigarette Use

We did not investigate whether guardians discussed their concerns on e-cigarette usage with their adolescents. It is also unclear what specific health consequences guardians and adolescents are aware of. These may be points of further investigation and intervention.

Characterization of Total and Unprotonated (Free) Nicotine Content of Nicotine Pouch Products

These "tobacco-free" nicotine pouches have similar pH and nicotine content to conventional tobacco products, such as moist snuff and snus. Although they lack many tobacco-related chemicals, most are highly flavored which could increase experimentation from new users. Given that nicotine pouches may appeal to a spectrum of users, from novice to experienced users, in terms of their flavors and nicotine content, it is important to examine and include these emerging tobacco products as they relate to tobacco control research, policy, and practice.

Structural Conditions as Cause: Explaining the Rapid Rise in Youth E-Cigarette Use by Re-thinking Models of Addiction

We argue that the surge in youth e-cigarette use in particular, as well as the phenomenon of addiction in general, are easier to comprehend if models of addiction are expanded to conceptualize the problem in its wider dimensions. We invite addictions researchers to join us in expanding the field's analytical view.
