Vaping has become increasingly more prevalent, and nurses need to understand the risks, assess health effects, and provide education on vaping cessation and avoidance.
Despite the steady rise in electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) uptake among young adults, increasingly more young people want to quit. Given the popularity of smartphones among young adults, mobile-based e-cigarette cessation interventions hold significant promise. Smartphone apps are particularly promising due to their varied and complex capabilities to engage end users. However, evidence around young adults' preferences and expectations from an e-cigarette cessation smartphone app remains unexplored.
The findings of this study reveal unique aspects that encompass the process of quitting vaping. These findings have significant implications for both policy and intervention development.
Some electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) users are interested in quitting e-cigarette use, though few studies have assessed what factors contribute to this interest. This study aimed to identify factors associated with e-cigarette quitting interest and quitting behaviors in exclusive, long-term e-cigarette users.
Adolescent electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use has continued due to the ongoing struggle with nicotine addiction affecting teenagers. By briefly discussing the timeline of the emergence of e-cigarettes and nicotine addiction in adolescents, this author hopes to shed some light on mitigation strategies to curtail this ongoing epidemic of youth e-cigarette use and nicotine addiction through public health education and advocacy.
Identifying predictors of electronic nicotine product (ENP) cessation can inform ENP cessation interventions. High rates of cooccurring ENP and cigarette (dual) use and transitions between these products underscore the importance of considering cigarette smoking status when assessing and addressing ENP cessation.
Nicotine vaping among youth has increased, warranting concern from tobacco control proponents. Many youth who vape indicate interest in quitting; however, few empirically supported vaping cessation interventions exist. This pilot feasibility study adapted an established behavioral intervention, contingency management (CM), delivered via telehealth to promote vaping cessation among young adults.
Among YSMW and nonbinary people AFAB, harm and wellness themes discouraged vaping more than pride-themed messages (p's < 0.001). Harms messages resulted in worse feelings about vaping than wellness and pride messages (p's < 0.02). Images of couples were perceived as more effective than cartoon images (p = .008). Among current EC users, viewing images of individuals resulted in greater readiness to avoid ECs and higher intentions to abstain than the couple or cartoon conditions (p's < 0.001).
