Understanding e-Cigarette Addictiveness: Triangulation of Focus Group and Netnographic Data

Background: Numerous studies have shown that e-cigarettes are addictive. For example, we previously showed that users of e-cigarette online forums discuss experiences of addiction in a netnographic analysis. However, it is unclear what makes e-cigarettes addictive apart from nicotine. In a focus group analysis, we recently identified 3 unique features of e-cigarettes that users linked to experiences of addiction: the pleasant taste, unobtrusiveness, and unlimited usability of e-cigarettes.

Objectives: The effects of nicotine metabolism on the kidneys of healthy individuals have not been determined. The nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR) indicates the rate of nicotine metabolism and is linked to smoking behaviors and responses to tobacco treatments. Flavor & device choices among people who use ENDS: Results from the PATH Study

Introduction: In guidance published in February 2020, the FDA described their intent to prioritize enforcement against the sale of flavored cartridge-based electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) except tobacco and menthol flavors. This guidance was specific to cartridge-based ENDS and did not apply to other ENDS types or e-liquids sold in the United States (U.S.). It remains unknown if use of certain types of ENDS devices and flavors changed following the publication of this guidance.

The CATCH My Breath Vaping Prevention Curriculum: An Evaluation of Impacts in Central Appalachian Middle and High Schools, 2019-2023

Introduction/objectives: Since 2015, the rise in e-cigarette use among youth has concerned public health authorities. After peaking in 2019, usage rates have declined but remain high. In 2023, 10% of high school and 4.6% of middle school students reported current use. This report describes the implementation and evaluation of a school-based e-cigarette prevention program, CATCH My Breath (CMB), in 8 central Appalachian counties. These counties have some of the highest rates of tobacco use, poor health, and premature death in the United States.

Importance: Synthetic nicotine is increasingly used in e-cigarette liquids along with flavors to appeal to youths. Regulatory loopholes have allowed tobacco manufacturers to use social media to target youths.
